Can electric vehicles make us safer drivers?
Electric Vehicles will be the norm in 20 years but besides the benefits of clearer air and saving on fuel costs, could they actually benefit the way we drive? Hyundai has recently conducted an experiment to test this.
People were tested in petrol or diesel cars and then electric vehicles to compare how they reacted to the stressors of urban driving. The factors measured were pulse rate, facial expressions, eye movements, how tightly the steering wheel was gripped (using force sensitive resistors) and how hard or smooth accelerating and braking was (using an accelerometer).
The results showed drivers felt more relaxed, calmer and aware when in an electric vehicle as well as driving in a more efficient manner. As Electric Vehicles are generally easier after drivers have adapted to the different style of driving, drivers were psychologically more at peace. This may also be due to less engine noise and being aware that pedestrians can’t hear the approach of cars the same. We tend to drive electric cars more carefully but not having to negotiate with gears can also help relax the driver.
What do you think? If you’ve recently switched to an electric vehicle do you think this has made you a safer driver?
