Electric Vehicle Charging: Changes to the industry
Electric vehicles and electric vehicle charging are a relatively new phenomenon, so it comes as no surprise that there are regular changes, and announcements that affect the sector.
In today’s blog we wanted to update you on two announcements that may affect you if you’re considering an electric car now or in the future.
- Smart electric vehicle chargers for all
As of the 1st July 2019 all newly installed government funded electric vehicle charging points must be ‘smart’.
This means chargepoints must be able to be remotely accessed, and capable of receiving, interpreting and reacting to a signal. Smart charging can also reduce high peaks of electricity demands, minimising the cost of electric vehicles to the electricity system – and keeping costs down for customers by encouraging off-peak charging.
Alongside this the government has also announced that they have maintained grants to install chargepoints at home and in the workplace at their current level of up to £500, making charging easier for customers and ensuring that plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles can be used to their full potential.

- All new homes to be fitted with electric car charging points
All new-build homes could soon be fitted with an electric car chargepoint. The government outlined the plans earlier this month in a public consultation on changing building regulations in England. The consultation comes alongside a package of announcements to support electric vehicle drivers and improve the experience of electric vehicle charging.
The proposals aim to support and encourage the growing uptake of electric vehicles within the UK by ensuring that all new homes with a dedicated car parking space are built with an electric chargepoint, making charging easier, cheaper and more convenient for drivers.
At Norcroft Energy we have been installing electric vehicle charging points for our customers for several years. We install a number of different types of charging points, including Rolec, Zappi and PodPoint dependent on our customers needs.
