Modern cars producing 7% more CO2
Consumer group Which? have carried out tests on 292 car models since the start of 2017 to measure emissions released. Although emissions linked to harming human health (CO and NOx) have decreased, CO2 emissions have increased in almost all car classes and fuel types.
On average the latest petrol, diesel and hybrid cars are producing 7% more CO2 than those produced in 2017 (151.6gm/km to 162.1gm/km). This is due to modern cars generally being bigger and incorporating more advanced technology.
The higher CO2 emissions from newer vehicles contradicts the UK’s pledge to produce “net zero” emissions by 2050. It will be interesting to see what happens after the ban on petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles but we hope to see people make the switch to electric vehicles sooner to combat climate change.
