Tour de France set to pass over 1000 solar panels installed by Norcroft Energy
In just one month’s time, the worlds greatest cycle race will be passing through Yorkshire. Running from Saturday July 5th to Sunday July 27th 2014, the 101th Tour de France will see two hundred elite cyclists cover a total distance of 3,656 kilometres.
We are very excited that this year the route through Yorkshire takes athletes through Huddersfield and Holmfirth. We will be joining many fans on the roadsides on 6th July to cheer them on and be part of this special event.
When the exact route was announced, it got me thinking. I wonder how many solar panels we have installed along this route? I tasked Philip with this calculation and the answer is over 1,000! It’s great to see more and more people embracing renewable energy and it’s a privilege to have installed so many solar panels along this route.
Cycling is a great sport and hobby for many. Traveling from A to B on a bike also reduces pollution. Will the Tour de France encourage more people to get out on their bikes this summer I wonder? Will you be cycling to work? According to Environment Protection UK, road transport accounts for 22% of total UK emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), a major contributor to climate change. If we all challenged ourselves to cycle to work one day a week as opposed to driving this summer, we could all be doing our bit for the environment.
The government aims to reduce greenhouse gases to help their long term goal of reducing the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% compared to 1990 levels by 2050. The primary sources of greenhouse gas emissions is from burning fossil fuels for electricity, heat, and transportation. We can all do our bit for the environment, whether it’s walking or cycling to work, changing to LED lights in the home, or generating our own electricity through solar panels.
We wish all those competing in the Tour de France the best of luck, and when you’re out there watching and cheering them on, remember you too could be getting on your bike and helping the environment.
